When renovating, picking paint colour is one thing, but paint glossiness is a whole different can of worms. If you don’t understand the differences, you might be left with a paint job you can’t stand. It’s always best to go over glossiness with professional painters when you’re starting renovations.

Matte 

A matte finish, also called a flat finish, is a non-reflective paint finish. It is most commonly used for hiding imperfections like cracks, bumps, and textures. Matte paint contains a high percentage of pigment which makes it a suitable option for many kinds of surfaces like walls, ceilings, and trim. This also means the rooms painted with a matte finish feel cozier.

However, there are some problems with a matte finish. It is not very durable, leaving it prone to getting scuffed and stained. It also more susceptible to damage from moisture and humidity. Cleaning surfaces with a matte finish can be a problem too since it absorbs stains. Aggressive cleaning methods can cause the colour to fade, leaving a more noticeable mark than the stain itself.

Semi-gloss

Semi-gloss is the most versatile finish. Unlike matte paint, it is resistant to moisture. It is slightly shiny, but that doesn’t overshadow the pigment of the paint. Semi-gloss is recommended for humid areas like the bathroom, kitchen and laundry, as well as trim and framework.  

Some downsides to a semi-gloss finish are that the shine can dull over time, it cannot easily be painted over, and it can come out patchy if not done by a skilled interior painter. 

High gloss

High gloss finishes are the most reflective of the three. They’re the easiest to clean and are highly durable, making them perfect for high traffic areas, garages, workspaces, and kids’ rooms.

However, high gloss finish tends to show every imperfection and bump on the surface, so sanding and priming properly is a must. Furthermore, the colour may not be the same on the surface as it is in the can, so it is a good idea to swatch the paint on an offcut or small section of the surface first.
