Confidence is a powerful thing.If a person appears to be unwavering self-confidence, they most likely have cultivated it over time. Life has a way of defeating us sometimes. Whether it’s a well-meaning comment or a rejection of some sort, many things can cause your confidence to dwindle.

Sometimes the phrase "you have to fake it till you make it" rings true when working towards a higher level of confidence. Below are several ways you can cultivate your self-esteem.  

1. Take Care of Yourself

Making yourself a priority is one of the most important things you can do to become more confident. Whether this means taking a spa day, seeking out the best teeth whitening in Sydney, or putting on makeup and doing your hair, making sure you feel good is key to upping your self-confidence.

2. Believe in Daily Affirmations

Daily affirmations are positive phrases you say to yourself every day to help improve your self-image. For example, if you don’t like the way you look, you might spend time each day picking out things you do like about your appearance and affirming them in the mirror.

A trick that works well with daily affirmations is rather than make statements like, “I like my eyes,” ask yourself the question, “Why do I like my eyes?” Your brain is wired to seek out answers, which will help solidify the affirmation.

3. Get Out of Your Comfort Zone

The best way to conquer fears is to face them. If you’re insecure, there’s a good chance others are too. Every time you step out of your comfort zone successfully, you build confidence. Do this as often as you can and watch your self-confidence soar.

4. Stop Being Your Own Worst Critic

We are often our own worst critics. Repeatedly undermining our self-esteem can eventually smash our confidence to smithereens. If your inner critic keeps you from achieving the things you desire, it’s time to stop listening to it and start thinking positive.

For example, if you view yourself as a failure, stop and ask yourself, “What evidence is there that proves I am a failure?” Also ask, “What evidence is there that proves I’m not a failure?” It might be hard to switch your thinking, but it’s crucial you find opportunities to appreciate your strengths and positive traits as often as possible.

5. Help Someone Else

It feels good to help someone else. Helping others is a great way to shift your internal focus from your perceived weaknesses and enables you to feel pride in what you’ve done. Volunteer your time to a worthy cause like mentoring a child or providing companionship to a senior, and you’ll notice your self-confidence growing with each passing day.

6. Learn to Set Boundaries

No one likes to be a doormat, but lacking confidence may lead to others unconsciously taking advantage of you. Learn to be assertive. Learn to say no if you don’t want to do something someone has asked you to do. Teach others to respect your decisions and your boundaries. If possible, take assertiveness classes to learn how to ask for the things you want. The more you learn to control your life, the higher your aplomb will be.

Self-confidence is a powerful thing. With self-confidence, you can achieve almost anything. Use the tips listed above and become a more confident you in no time.
