In the early 1970’s Vogue magazine famously proclaimed, “There are no rules in the fashion game now.”

Indeed, by following in the footsteps of the ‘60s – defying old traditions and exploring new forms of self-expression – the ‘70s became celebrated as one of the most stylish and colourful decades of all time.

Just look at the subcultures that blossomed during this period, from psychedelic rock and glam through to punk, disco, and funk. While these genres were influential for their music, it was the bold and innovative style of clothing that took the fashion world by storm. In fact, many trends from this era have recently made a comeback – bell bottoms, anyone?

With that being said, it’s no surprise retro ‘70s parties are all the rage these days. Fortunately, it’s easy and affordable to find a costume that will help you get into the ‘70s spirit.

Here are 5 groovy costume ideas to help you achieve just that.

1. Fever 70s Groovy Babe

This women’s costume has all the elements of a classic ‘70s costume. Flared sleeves and pants? Check. Multi-coloured long sleeve retro top? Check. Complete with matching platform shoes, a peace symbol necklace, and hoop earrings? Yep!

Aside from being very faithful to the era, the flared sleeves and pants allow for ease of movement – ideal for hitting the dancefloor!

2. Tie-Die Shirt and Dress

Characterised by the use of dye to achieve bright, saturated primary colours and bold patterns, tie-dye clothing reached peak popularity in the ‘70s yet has recently seen a resurgence with modern production techniques and more subdued, sophisticated designs.

Of course, if you want to embrace the cliché ‘rainbow pattern’ designs, you’ll find plenty of costume shops who offer the classic tie-dye look. Best of all? When you purchase online you avoid the hassle of having to dying the clothes yourself.

3. Men’s Disco Suit

While John Travolta was not the first to wear a white leisure suit in a disco, its presence in the film Saturday Night Fever has made it a timeless go-to costume for any retro themed party.

Fortunately, when you purchase from any reputable costume store you get the complete set in one go, including a jacket, waistcoat, and trousers. You can also choose from a range of colours outside of the standard white such as purple, yellow, and gold. Of course, don’t forget to wear a wig – preferably a black pompadour or rockabilly style.

4. Psychedelic Rocker Men’s Costume

Late 60s to early 70s rockers like Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, and Kiss were renowned for not only their musical talent but also their outrageous clothing. Sure, you may not be able to play or sing like them, but you can at least look the part in this stylish psychedelic rockers costume – featuring a ruffled patterned top, white fur waistcoat, matching headpiece, and red velveteen trousers.

Of course, don’t forget to hit the stage with a fake electric guitar (or a real one, if you suddenly feel like bursting into song)!

5. Disco Diva Costume

Disco will never die! At least not while funky costumes like this continue to exist. You’ll look stunning in this short, silver dress with a swirling black pattern and a matching headband. Best of all? As the 100% polyester material is thin and breathable, you’ll stay cooler in summer and have the flexibility to pull off your favourite dance moves with ease.
