There is nothing more infuriating than seeing getting dressed in the morning as a frustrating chore. If you spend mornings standing in front of a closet and wondering endlessly what to wear, it’s time you changed some things. The key to always having what to wear is building a capsule wardrobe.

Although we buy and own more clothes than ever before, we usually have the same issue – feeling like there is nothing to wear. The problem is that most of those clothing items are just randomly collected over the years. That can hardly make a functional wardrobe. Here are the most important tips on how to make your wardrobe functional and gorgeous.

What is a Capsule Wardrobe?

A capsule wardrobe is a term that has existed for several decades now. It was coined by Susie Faux and it referred to a specific way of clothing that included fewer items and better style. The whole point of this type of wardrobe is having a collection of carefully picked essential items of clothing.

They should be classical, timeless pieces that never go out of fashion. That way, they can be paired with each other and always look classy. With these pieces, you always have what to wear, and you can build your own style rather quickly.

Capsule Wardrobe Benefits

There are several reasons why having a capsule wardrobe is such a great idea. Firstly, it helps you get organised. If you feel like your current wardrobe is messy and has no beginning or an end, investing in these specific pieces of clothing might be a great way to reduce clutter and focus on pieces of importance.

Another great benefit is that you’ll save time getting dressed every day. With pieces that can be combined and paired, you’ll quickly get outfit ideas without having to try on various combinations each day.

Not only time, but you will also save money since you’ll need fewer items of clothing. When buying fewer clothes, you look for higher-quality items. When you buy less and buy better, you rarely get overwhelmed, and you are more likely to make better clothing decisions.

How to Start a Capsule Wardrobe?

What do you need in a capsule wardrobe? The answer to this question is entirely up to you. That means that you should consider your body type, style, way of living, and your personal preferences to build the ideal capsule wardrobe for you. It will also depend on the climate you live in.

For instance, if you live in a colder area, you might need more different types of jackets or boots, while those in warmer areas don’t need as many. If you work from home, you might need fewer clothing options than if you commute to the office every day.

To make the wardrobe functional, focus on must-have items for each season. To start, make sure to get some classic pants and skirts and tops to go with them. Look for comfortable pieces that can be multifunctional. Add in some cute sandals and a gorgeous floral jumpsuit long sleeve to be ready for any occasion.

Sort Your Existing Clothes

Before you start investing in new clothes, make sure that you have used everything you have to its full potential. The first thing you need to do is sort everything you own into three piles – yes, no, and maybe. For sure, you have clothes you love, wear, and intend to keep for years to come.

You surely have clothes you haven’t touched in years. If that’s the case, store them away, give them to friends and family, or donate to a charity.

When it comes to the maybe pile, take your time and go through each item. Try everything on and get rid of everything that’s too long, too short, too tight, or it simply no longer feels like you. If you’re undecided even after trying, store them away and revisit them after a couple of months.

Stick to a Colour Palette

When you want to mix and match endlessly, you really need to approach shopping strategically. The simplest way to do so is to have a colour palette that you focus on. For instance, you could pick four basic colours – black, white, grey, and brown.

These are rather easy colours to combine, and you can mix them with other colours and prints as well. You can pick a few accent colours to keep in your palette, too. For example, you might stick to red and pink or lilac and blue.

Minimise Shopping

How can you ensure that you have a capsule wardrobe? Simply, you can do it by minimising shopping. You should only look for pieces that you find necessary and the ones that fit perfectly into your wardrobe vision.

When shopping, try to be mindful. Try to avoid buying unnecessary pieces just because they’re on sale. Instead, include only items you know you’ll wear. If you’re not sure whether you need it, you don’t!

Conclusion

Having a beautiful wardrobe is the goal always. However, having a beautiful and functional wardrobe is the ultimate dream. With these simple tips, you can build the perfect wardrobe and have the right outfit for every occasion.
