Power Tool Maintenance: 5 Ways You’re Doing It Right

  • Written by Ester Adams

Power tools are quite handy for when you have construction projects or repairs that need to be done either at work or at home. It makes the job a whole lot easier and diminishes the workload that you need to finish. In Milwaukee alone, Milwaukee tools represent the beer-brewing and heavily industrial setup of the city. Milwaukee is known as the largest city in Wisconsin. Aside from its moving museums, skywalk, majestic lakes, and large downtown ice rink, the city has also introduced several inventions to the world.

These inventions include the typewriter, the answering machine, automobiles, and the patent for the first motorcycle engine bearing two cylinders (courtesy of mechanical engineer, William Harley). Indeed, Milwaukee has had its fair share of innovations and constructive milestones, and it is not surprising for it to have several providers of high-quality power tools and materials for engineering and construction.

In that regard, here are five ways to care for your power tools, as detailed by some of our warehouse experts from the ‘The Mil’:

  • Store it at room temperature.

Overexposure to heat directly affects the quality and durability of your power tools. It is especially detrimental to the batteries that power up your apparatuses. By keeping your tools in a cool and dry place with ample ventilation and no direct exposure to the sun’s rays, you extend the life expectancy of your tool’s batteries. It also prevents specific hazards and risks that could potentially take place when large tools are left along the sidewalk or the balcony. You can also use silica gels to prevent moisture and moulds from accumulating.

  • Clean it after every use.

Failure to clean your power tools after each use can lead to the building up of rust and dust. When this happens, your tools may not perform fully or optimally the next time you use it. More importantly, when waste materials and gunk are left untouched within the crevices of your tools, it also causes it to more serious damage, thereby costing you tons of money.

  • Sharpen and tighten regularly.

With every use of your tools, it is possible that screws can go loose, or blades get blunter the more it is exposed to extreme friction. You should make it a habit to check the screws and bolts on your tools, and tighten any that you find is hanging loosely around your equipment. Sharpening the blades and drill bits of your tools lessens the amount of power you need to apply when using it. It also makes your work more efficient. Changing drill bits is also important to maintain efficiency in drilling into materials that you are working on. Dewalt drill bit replacement can be tricky if you are not familiar with the method. However, you can find a handful of tutorials online to guide you with it.

  • Check for any irregularities.

Aside from cleaning, sharpening, and tightening the key components of your tools, it is also important to keep a close eye on any irregularities it may exhibit while in use. For instance, does the engine take longer to start? Or does it require more force for it to get up and running? Do you notice any extra vibrations on the blades or screws the moment you turn on the tool? Does it seem like the batteries are about to go out? Taking time to observe such minute details in your tools’ performance allows you to determine whether your equipment needs immediate repairs or if it is time to replace it with a new one.

  • Inspect the power cord.

Power cords are an integral part of your power tools. Power cords that are in tiptop condition are a trademark of milwaukee tools. Thus it is necessary to keep a close watch on whether the cords have acquired tears and ruptures or if the wires have started fraying. Otherwise, you might be risking your safety because tools with faulty power cords and wiring are more prone to causing unprecedented disasters.

Did you find these tips helpful? What other hacks do you have for keeping power tools in tiptop shape?
