Not many people are aware of it, but Australia is one of the leading producers of wool in the world. About a quarter of the total global production of wool, for instance, comes from Down Under. According to the Department of Agriculture, the product's export revenues reached over $3.6 billion in 2016-2017. You can find wool from all over Australia, except in the Northern Territory. In terms of volume, New South Wales is the largest exporter in terms of volume, with Victoria, Western Australia, and South Australia trailing behind.

Meanwhile, the Australian wool quilt is one of the signature products coming from the country. It is one of the most popular export products, most of which goes to China. But it is also very much in demand in the local market.

There is no general rule when choosing the type of loft or the thickness of the wool quilt. As you might expect, the thicker the material, the more rapidly it can keep you warm during those winter nights.

The loft, also called the wool's thickness, is usually classified according to the grams per square metre measurement unit. To give you an idea, here are some of the different lofts:

  1. 200-300 GSM - The wool quilt with this measurement is ideal for mid-summer months. It does not provide warmth as much as a security blanket for some people. They like the texture of the material, and it helps them sleep.

  2. 430 GSM - At this level, the wool quilt is already quite thick and can be used during the cold nights.

  3. 500 GSM - A wool quilt at this range is not only thick but also quite heavy. For really cold nights, it can make you feel secure and warm. Also, there are studies that blankets that are quite heavy will help improve sleep quality.

How to Maximise Use of your Wool Quilt

  1. You can use the wool quilt as another layer of cushion when you are outdoors. You can sleep on the ground or the wooden bench and use it as a pillow, for instance.

  1. Speaking of outdoors, put the wool quilt around your shoulders and it can keep you warm as you lounge on the porch chair during the winter season and watch the world go by.

  1. Bring it with you when you set up camp with the kids as a form of bonding. Build a campfire, make some smores, and put the quilt around you and your child, as you snuggle in front of the fire. You can also use it as a sleeping bed to which you turn for the night.

  1. Drape the wool quilt on your couch or dinner chair to enhance the decor. They come in different colours and textures, and they will break the monotony of any room. Another advantage of throwing your quilt on the couch is that you can pull it out to provide extra warmth as you watch TV.

Finally, when your Australia wool quilt becomes quite old, you do not have to throw it right away. It can still be repurposed in various ways such as a chair accessory, floor mat, doll clothes, or extra bedding for your dog. They will love that your smell sticks to the material, and it will make them feel secure and sleep better.
