If you live on the canals of the Gold Coast, the mighty Yarra or even along the estuaries of Sydney, you know the scene, six or seven 60–70-year-olds, drinking white wine and putting along the waterways on a Sunny Sunday afternoon.  Maybe old Ray will throw in a line and catch something for Carolyn to throw on the onboard barbie.  And you think, retirement goals.

But an increasing number of upwardly mobile Gen X and Millennials aren’t waiting. When Melbourne introduced aqua donuts, the “mini party boat” lifestyle took off.   The rise of river cruising is here.

You might be forgiven for thinking it’s an American thing.  The Ozarks, waterways of Florida and the affluent snowbirds retiring to Lake Tahoe all seem to have “those” boats.  The shallow, rounded bottom, the motor built for cruising, not speed and the luxe features built for comfort while you enjoy a wine or two.  They’re called Pontoon Boats and they’re fast becoming the must-have for Australians, young and old.

So, how do you join the ranks of the rich and tipsy?

  • First, choose a Pontoon Boat that has the seating layout, carrying capacity and optional extras you need.  Do you want an onboard kitchenette or would you prefer to maximise space for extra guests?

  • Next choose the motor size and type you need.  Most pontoon boat companies will advise you on the right choice and create a package for you.

  • Pontoon boats require, you guessed it, a pontoon.  If you don’t have one of your own, you will find spaces to rent at your local marina.

  • Don’t forget the transport.  If you’re towing your boat, you ‘ll need a boat trailer (and an appropriate tow vehicle with tow ball) or, if you’re ready to drop her into your own waterfront pontoon, choose a boat transport company that does door-to-door delivery.

  • And the cost?  A pontoon boat will set you back in the ballpark of $100K depending on the features, layout and motor type you choose.  They’re an investment.  So choose an Australian built, reputable brand.  If you’re buying second hand, get yourself a specialised inspection before you put your dollars down.
