When you choose to study in Australia, you don't just get to benefit from our amazing education systems. You get to enjoy a more relaxed way of life, beautiful beaches, coral reefs and a fantastic social life. But studying in Australia doesn't just mean hopping on a plane and starting your new life within just a few weeks. It takes an incredible amount of planning and organisation to ensure you hit the ground running with your studies.

Logistics, visas, cultural differences, insurance - there’s a lot to get through! Here we’ll explore how you can prepare for your future in Australia with the following simple tips.

Get to grips with car insurance

Many students in Australia decide to learn to drive so they can enjoy a sense of independence whilst overseas as well as to make life easier. If you’re going to look into passing your test then you’ll need to get to grips with your car insurance, fast – click the link for more information about car insurance from Qantas. Finding the right cover means deciding on what kind of policy would suit you best, whether you need comprehensive cover, third party including fire and theft or just third party only.

Open a bank account

If you're planning on being in Australia for quite some time, opening an Australian bank account makes perfect sense. Otherwise, you'll be grappling with extortionate international banking fees as you try and access your money from your current account. Look around for the best deal and keep interest rates in mind!

Health insurance is a must

Does your study program include health insurance? If it doesn’t, then you’re going to need to get some Overseas Student Health Cover. Before you take out a policy or accept any policy that is provided in your study program, ensure you know what is covered. That way there won’t be any nasty (or expensive) surprises at the hospital.

Think about a budget

If you're choosing to study in Melbourne or Sydney, congratulations – you've chosen two of the most expensive cities in the world. Jokes aside, if you're planning on studying in Australia, you're going to need to create a budget that takes your room and board, groceries, car payments and insurance into consideration. Otherwise, you may struggle to fund your time in Australia.

However, you can always get yourself a job so you can fund your student lifestyle. Bar and restaurant work, or even working with tourists and in local shops are straightforward roles that students can quickly get to grips with.

Don’t believe the stereotypes

Steve Irwin, Crocodile Dundee… don't be fooled into thinking all Australians look and behave like the national treasures. It's highly unlikely that you'll meet a crocodile hunter whilst you're sitting in a bar in Melbourne. Be wary of stereotyping locals and making a faux pas, and remember that Australia is, in fact, a place of great cultural diversity. You'll find people from all walks of life there.

Final thoughts…

Are you planning on studying in Australia? What are you looking forward to the most?
