From Lot to the Open Road: How to Get Your Caravan Road Ready
Buying a caravan is the beginning of many new adventures, but before you can start travelling, there are a few practical steps to complete.
From understanding your caravan’s weights and checking your towing setup to completing registration with VicRoads, getting these details right helps ensure your caravan is safe, compliant and ready for the road.
Check your caravan and tow vehicle setup
A caravan and tow vehicle need to work together. Before travelling, confirm that your vehicle is suitable for the caravan you have chosen.
Check:
- Your towbar is correctly rated
- Electrical connections are working correctly
- Mirrors provide adequate visibility
A correctly matched towing setup improves safety, handling and overall towing confidence.
Understand your caravan weight ratings
Caravan weights are important for both towing and registration. The key measurements to understand are Tare Weight, Aggregate Trailer Mass (ATM) and Payload.
Prepare for your VicRoads appointment
Before registering your caravan with VicRoads, make sure you have the required information ready.
You will need:
- Proof of identity (you must be at least 16 years old)
- Your caravan’s VIN or chassis number
- Tare Weight and ATM details
- The correct VicRoads registration form based on your caravan’s ATM
Your caravan’s ATM determines which registration process applies. Most recreational caravans fall between 751kg and 4.5 tonnes ATM and require a Vehicle Registration Form. Caravans and trailers up to 750kg ATM use a Light Trailer Registration Form.
If the caravan has never been registered in Australia, the VIN must be recorded on the Australian Government’s Register of Approved Vehicles (RAV). Caravans without the required identification details or compliance plate will need these arranged before registration can proceed.
Complete your caravan registration
New caravan registrations in Victoria must be completed in person at a VicRoads Customer Service Centre.
You will need to book the appropriate trailer registration appointment and pay any applicable appointment and inspection fees. Depending on the caravan’s ATM, VicRoads may inspect the caravan during the appointment.
Once approved, you will receive your registration and number plates. Bringing tools to attach your plates before leaving is also recommended. After registration, you can manage renewals through your myVicRoads account.
