Vaping In Australia: 3 Updates To Know

  • Written by Viw Magazine

Vaping has taken the world by storm, but what are the current regulations in Australia on this worldwide trend?

Australia has recently made a few adaptions to the laws regarding vaping, with most states and territories banning the promotion of these products. New ways of getting hold of vaping liquids containing nicotine have made it more difficult for vapers to get hold of their favorite vaping juice.

Safety concerns are one of the reasons the legislation has changed along with curbing underage use of nicotine products. Young adults were listed as the most vulnerable group concerning exposure to nicotine products. The decisions to change the legal aspects were made with the public’s safety in mind and promote better health.

If you are a vaper, you might want to continue reading for the latest updates regarding vaping in Australia:

1. Health Benefits, Or Not?

According to the Australian Medical Association (AMA), the Cancer Council Australia, and the Australian Council on Smoking and Health (ACOSH), there is not enough evidence to deem vaping safe for use by any person. Persons traveling to Australia with vaping products will have to adhere to the new legalities, too, to promote better health amongst Australians.

As more research, less proof is found on any benefits of vaping and more on the harmful effects. The ‘cool’ factor attached to the image of vaping may attract younger individuals to start using nicotine products earlier in their lives. For growing bodies, the impact on their health could even be greater than other individuals.

Although many people have claimed that vaping assisted them in stopping regular smoking of cigarettes, the AMA and ACOSH have found no sound evidence that it does. On the contrary, they found that many vapers actually relapse and go back to cigarettes.

The various health organizations noted that vaping might normalize smoking, attracting more people to the bad habit. Most of these organizations have called for stricter control and regulations regarding using, advertising, and selling nicotine-containing vaping products.

2. Legalities

On the 1st of October 2021, Australia enacted new legislation regarding vaping products. Any nicotine product will now be regulated by stricter measures to use them properly.

Getting hold of nicotine products, including e-cigarettes, pods, or vaping liquid, would require a prescription from a doctor, which could only be filled at the local pharmacy or an online pharmacy. After receiving advice from the Advisory Committee on Medicines and Chemicals Scheduling, the nicotine-containing product schedule increased from schedule seven to schedule four.

The products may only be used by the person who has the prescription, and it would be illegal to share these products with friends, family, or anyone else that is not authorized to do so. Like any other medical prescription, the products obtained from the pharmacy will only be available for use by the intended person mentioned on the official prescription.

The legislation also included a section that makes it mandatory to have a child-safe container where vaping liquids containing nicotine should be stored. Most online and retail stores can still sell nicotine-free products, although they cannot advertise these products in-store or publicly.

3. Regulated Products And Ingredients

The ingredients of the vaping liquids are another concern of health organizations. Most liquids are not subject to regulations and could contain more harmful substances than initially thought. Some recent studies have shown that e-liquids may contain formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and acrolein. These ingredients are often not included on the labels of the liquids, and buyers are unaware of the dangers they face when purchasing these unsafe products.

Because products were previously not strictly regulated, unsafe products may fall through many cracks in the system. The health organizations hope that these unsafe products will be used less with the new regulatory legislation as the medical doctors will prescribe only high-quality products.

Other safety concerns the organization wishes to address would be the variety of devices, incomplete or incorrect information on the various products, and the availability of nicotine products to younger users. The decision to regulate nicotine products was made considering the high addiction potential of these products in mind.

To Conclude

The new legislation and guidelines may seem unfair and harsh for current vapers, but the decisions were made with their health in mind.

Finding nicotine-containing products may be more difficult for good reason. Young adults are being exposed to potentially harmful products at an early age and may even convert to regular cigarettes if they continue using vaping products.

Making vaping safer would have to include stricter regulations to ensure that all the products are up to standard. Not knowing what is in a liquid or product could cause major health concerns that may have been prevented. Keep safe by following the law and buying safe, regulated products.
