Treatment for fructose intolerance

  • Written by Viw Magazine

When it comes to your body absorbing nutrients, there are times when you find yourself with an intolerance. In this situation, your body cannot absorb the necessary nutrients to keep it functioning. One of the nutrients that some people find hard to absorb is fructose, a naturally occurring sugar found in fruits and vegetables. It is burnt up by the body to create energy in its simple state. Being unable to absorb it might lead to issues like low energy levels in patients. Since fructose intolerance is treated based on the cause, doctors need to identify the cause of the intolerance before they create a treatment plan. Here are some of the treatment plans that doctors follow based on the cause.

Fructose malabsorption

When a person has fructose malabsorption, it means their body cannot absorb fructose from fruits and vegetables. The reason behind this is similar to other food intolerances and might be hereditary, lifestyle-caused, or other health issues. People with fructose malabsorption do not properly digest fructose and feel bloated or have painful digestion.

If you are diagnosed with fructose malabsorption, you will have to cut down on foods with high fructose and see if the symptoms decrease after a few days. You can then think of introducing fructose back into your diet. That way, you get to see whether you can still manage to eat a fructose-filled diet or if it is something you should cut out in its entirety.

Essential fructosia

With this intolerance, the patient gets it from one of their parents who have the intolerance in their system. The good thing with this intolerance is one can grow up without ever realizing they have it since it has no symptoms and causes no harm to the body. One can lead a full life without worrying about the food they take or being put under any treatment.

Hereditary fructose intolerance

One of the severe forms of fructose intolerance is hereditary fructose intolerance. Although it is a high-risk intolerance, it can be treated and managed, which is good news for patients who have it. In this condition, the patient cannot digest fructose and any fructose precursors. Aside from bloating, it can lead to kidney failure in severe cases.

While there is no medication to cure the intolerance, patients with it will have to avoid taking all fruits since they contain fructose. They also need to find a way to make up for the vitamins they will not get since they get no fruits. With little attention given to their diets, patients can lead a healthy life.

Even though intolerances can seem hard to come to terms with, they are easily managed. All a patient needs to ensure they pay attention to what they eat and how they get nutrients into their system. Fructose intolerance is only life-threatening when care is not taken. A well-thought-out diet will ensure that one can lead a full and healthy life.
