First Trip to the USA? Phone and Data Tips Before You Board

Travelers Planning Their Journey

The first hour in an American airport can be busier than the flight. You might need to book a ride from LAX, message a hotel in Manhattan about a late check-in or find the train to your connecting terminal, all while your Australian phone plan decides what to charge you for the privilege.

Australian carriers' international roaming packs vary widely, so check what yours includes and what happens if you go over the allowance. Another option is a travel eSIM bought before you leave. If your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked, you can compare TravelKon USA eSIM plans at home, install one on Wi-Fi and switch it on when you land. Read the activation steps and plan details first, because data allowances, hotspot use and validity differ from plan to plan.

Check Your Phone Before You Pack It

Two things decide whether a travel eSIM will work for you. The handset has to support eSIM, and it has to be unlocked from your Australian carrier. If you bought the phone on a plan, check your carrier account or call them to confirm it is unlocked. Finding out at the departure gate leaves you with very few options.

Keep your Australian SIM in the phone as well. Many banks still send one-time codes by text, and you may need them to approve a card payment overseas. Set the travel eSIM as your mobile data line and turn off data roaming on your Australian number so it does not connect in the background. Whether texts still reach your home number in the US depends on your carrier's roaming arrangements, so ask before you go.

Download Before You Leave Home

The US is big, and mobile coverage thins out once you leave the cities. A drive from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon or along Highway 1 through Big Sur can include long stretches with a weak signal or none at all. Download offline maps for each region you plan to visit, and save hotel addresses, car hire confirmations and flight details somewhere you can open without data.

Install the apps you will rely on while you are still on home Wi-Fi: your airline, the ride-share app you plan to use and the transit apps for each city on your list. Sign in and add a payment card at home, so the first time you use the app is not at a crowded kerbside. At LAX, for example, taxi and ride-share pickups run from a separate lot reached by shuttle, and it helps to know that before you walk out of arrivals.

Work Out Whether You Need a US Number

Some travel eSIMs are data-only. That covers WhatsApp, iMessage, FaceTime and maps, but it will not give you a local number for a restaurant booking or a driver who prefers to call. If you need a US number, look for it in the plan details rather than assuming it is included. Save 911 for emergencies and the direct number for your accommodation in your contacts.

Read the Official Advice Early

Before you book, read Smartraveller's advice for the United States. It covers entry requirements, safety and local laws, and is updated when conditions change. Australians visiting on holiday usually travel under the Visa Waiver Program, which means applying for an ESTA online before departure. Use the official US government site and be wary of lookalike sites that charge extra to lodge the same form.

Medical treatment in the US can be very expensive, so check that your travel insurance covers the whole trip, including any side trips into Canada or Mexico. Save the policy number and the insurer's emergency line in your phone and on paper.

Plan for the Arrival Hall

The walk from the plane through immigration, baggage claim and customs at a large US airport can take a while. Before you leave your seat, switch your phone to the eSIM line and check it has connected. If it has not, restart the phone and confirm that data roaming is turned on for the eSIM line, which the setup instructions often ask for.

Once you are connected, send your accommodation an arrival time and book your ride before you reach the kerb. For the rest of the pre-departure list, from passports and visas to telling your bank you are travelling, this checklist of must-dos before travelling abroad covers the basics. Tick those off, charge a power bank, and you can step out into the arrivals hall with your phone ready.
