McDonald's Australia scales McCafé beverage platform nationwide after strong trial results

McDonald's Australia will roll out its largest beverage launch since McCafé opened in Australia in 1993, following a successful trial which highlighted shifting consumer preferences and strong demand for broader drink options.
From Wednesday, 15 July, ten new beverages will launch nationally acrossiced coffees, refreshers, crafted sodas and energiser drinks – marking a step-change in McCafé’s evolution beyond traditional coffee occasions.
The national rollout follows a five-month trial across more than 500 restaurants in Victoria and Queensland, which saw strong customer demand and reinforced Australians’ growing appetite for more diverse, flavour-led beverages suited to different occasions.
Trial data revealed beverages are increasingly moving from a meal accompaniment to a standalone purchase across multiple parts of the day. Breakfast and afternoon snacking emerged as key consumption moments during the trial, highlighting growing demand for beverage options beyond the traditional morning coffee occasion.
Crafted Sodas and Refreshers were typically purchased alongside meals, while Energisers and Iced & Cold Coffees were more often purchased as standalone drinks – with the two categories together accounting for more than half of all new beverages sold.
This shift reflects broader consumer behaviour, with new research commissioned by McDonald's Australia finding more than half (56%) of Australians choose beverages based on their mood, personality or energy levels, while 54% see grabbing a drink as the perfect reward after a busy day.
The top-performing beverages included the Red Bull Dragonberry Energiser, Berry Blast & Sprite Crafted Soda and Strawberry & Watermelon Refresher, demonstrating demand for a broader range of beverage options.
A strategic growth platform
Beverages continue to be a strategic growth pillar for McDonald’s globally, with the category playing an increasingly important role in unlocking new occasions and long-term growth opportunities.
After being one of the first McDonald’s markets globally to trial the new beverage platform, Australia is now the second market worldwide to launch it nationally, reinforcing the important role local customer insights continue to play in shaping McDonald’s global beverage strategy.
Annabel Fribence, Chief Marketing Officer, McDonald's Australia, said the rollout reflects both changing customer expectations and McDonald’s innovation pipeline.
"Beverages have evolved from a side order into one of the biggest growth opportunities for our business. Customers are telling us they want more choice, more flavour and drinks that suit different moments in their day - whether that's a morning kick-start, an afternoon reset, or a moment to treat yourself.
“This is the biggest expansion of McCafé in more than 30 years, building on a uniquely Australian legacy that began in Melbourne and has been shaped by Australia’s world-renowned coffee culture.
"We’re excited to bring this next chapter of McCafé to customers across the country, with a range that combines the quality coffee credentials customers know and trust with bold new flavours and fresh ways to enjoy McCafé throughout the day.
“A launch of this scale is only possible because of the close partnership we have with our Franchisees and suppliers - their commitment is what turns a strong customer insight into a great customer experience in restaurants."
A broader beverage portfolio
Building on the fan-favourite McCafé coffees and iconic beverages Australians already know and love, the expanded range introduces three entirely new beverage categories: Refreshers, Crafted Sodas and Energisers, alongside an expanded Iced & Cold Coffee lineup.
Featuring handcrafted beverages made to order with quality ingredients and modern formats, the range brings together bold flavours and premium touches including cold foam, popping pearls, and freeze-dried fruit.
Since opening the world’s first McCafé in Melbourne in 1993, there are now more than 1,000 McCafé’s across Australia and over 4,000 globally.
McDonald’s new beverage range is available in all restaurants nationally from Wednesday, 15 July, including via McDelivery and the MyMacca’s app.
