3 Tips for Easing Your Sore Back

  • Written by Viw Magazine

A sore back is one of the worst kinds of injuries since it can impact every area of your life. An aching back can make sleeping feel impossible, walking around can feel like running a marathon, and even sitting can be extremely painful. And whether your back pain is a result of an injury, or simply our result of worn-out joints over the years, a sore back is nevertheless painful and frustrating.

The good news is that there are ways to ease your sore back and move toward healing. Here are some of the best ways to alleviate your back pain.

Practice Correct Posture

It can't be stressed enough how important it is to sit up straight. Slouching or sitting in awkward positions will only exacerbate the problem. Maintaining a straight back is important day and night. If you must, wear a back brace to support proper posture because sometimes we can fall back into old habits.

The nice thing about a back brace is that it does the work for us, so we never have to worry about being conscious about our posture. Remember that posture also counts at night. That's why you need a high-quality mattress that is firm enough, yet also soft enough.

Sleeping on too hard or too soft of a mattress will lead to increased back pain, and ultimately a poor night's sleep.  And the more tired you are, the more irritating your back pain will be, so do yourself a favor and invest in a good mattress.

Apply Hot and Cold

When the pain really starts flaring up, you want immediate relief.  This is where alternating hot and cold can be extremely effective. Applying a heating pad, followed by a cold ice pack will help relax tight muscles, and promote blood flow. Thanks to the ice packs, you'll also reduce inflammation and numb the pain, which is the perfect combination for many.  However, you may find that one may work better than the other, so try out both, and see what works best for you personally.

Stretch

Many people think that lying down is the best way to ease an aching back, however, continuing to stay active is crucial.  Practice dynamic stretching regularly, to keep your muscles warmed up.  Gentle stretches will help alleviate the tension in your back and also continue to strengthen it. If you consult with your doctor, they'll be able to give you effective exercises and stretches that will help promote healing. Perhaps most important is maintaining a strong core, since the core is what supports your spine.

Remember, only your doctor can provide reliable advice and the correct exercises targeted towards your specific injuries.
